The Berry Farms Genetics Enterprise
Goal StatementTo develop an internationally recognized herd of registered jersey cattle by: capitalizing on the current genetic base, identifying and utilizing available genetic technologies, and communicating through industry trade venues. This is done for the sole purpose of enhancing the educational experience of Berry College Students. The Berry College Dairy herd still sits on the basis of its extraordinary genetic base. At this time, five cows are ranked excellent, one of which is in her second lactation! Privileges of maintaining such a small herd is that each cow can be individually assessed based on her strengths and weaknesses and bred according to those traits. The Dairy also maintains records of each cow's genetic line to help predict the potential of breeding combinations. The Berry College Dairy uses this knowledge to improve on its genetic base for strength, longevity and production. |
